How We Grow

Heirloom Gardens uses entirely natural methods to grow our food. No pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, or any of the other icky possibilities. We do everything we can to utilize growing methods that work with nature to help take care of the plants, including:

  • Companion planting

  • Plants (like onions and garlic) as pest deterrents

  • Crop rotation

  • Cover crops and living mulch

When we need to do a little extra to help our plants, everything is completely natural, including:

  • Homemade compost

  • Coffee grounds

  • Hand weeding

  • Soap and/or garlic sprays for pests

  • Physical barriers (like floating row covers)

That's it! We give our plants lots of TLC, and they stay healthy and strong. We're not certified as "organic" because we grow on such a small scale that the fees required for organic certification are out of our reach. However, we welcome everyone to come visit the Gardens to look at the plants and observe how we care for them.
